At Jupiter we are looking for entertaining, well-written science fiction stories and poetry. That's quite an open brief, and will hopefully ensure that Jupiter never becomes a boring read. For example, we wouldn't want a magazine full of space operas followed by more space operas. In case it's a help, the authors I look forward to reading most are Peter F. Hamilton, Arthur C. Clarke, Stephen Baxter, Kim Stanley Robinson, Robert Silverberg and Stephen Lawhead to name a few. All submissions to Jupiter should of course be original and unpublished anywhere else. We do not accept simultaneous submissions.

To make our job reading your manuscript easier, and with it increasing your chances of acceptance, we would be grateful if you took note of the following points:

  • We require First English Language Rights and Electronic Rights on any story or poem sent to us.
  • The estimated word count must be indicated on the front sheet of your manuscript, and also clearly at the top of your covering letter/e-mail. We reserve the right to return work unread that does not include this. Your name and address must also appear here. Pages should of course be numbered.
  • Manuscripts should be word-processed and available as electronic copy if required. Please use only one side of paper, double spaced lines and wide margins are also a help for the editor.
  • Please do not send us stories much shorter than 2000 words or much longer than 10000 words. Stories outside these limits may be returned unread. Poetry should ideally be less than 25 lines.
  • Please try to read a few recent issues of Jupiter before you submit anything to us. Making yourself aware of the market you're submitting to is genuinely essential. There is no better way of understanding the fiction or poetry that Jupiter publishes, other than by reading it. (Poets might want to try 'A Ship to Nowhere' as a guide to the sort of poetry we publish.)
  • Please do not bind your manuscripts together, except perhaps with a removable paperclip. Your manuscript should be easy for us to handle, and read in the way we want to.
  • UK Stamped, self-addressed envelopes are required for us to return your manuscript to you. The envelope must of course be of a suitable size. If you not a UK writer, please send a disposable manuscript (marked as such) and an envelope with two International Reply Coupons. Foreign stamps, while nice to look at, are useless to us.
  • We will try to read and return manuscripts as quickly as possible, however please be patient. If you have not received a reply within 2 months, do get in contact with us.

Artwork is also sought after and will be considered in most formats (hard copies being no greater than A4). Obviously a Science Fiction nature is essential.

Jupiter is also after articles which may be of interest to our readers. It's probably best to contact us first with an idea, unless you've worked with us on these things before.
As well as paper based manuscripts, Jupiter will also accept submissions by e-mail if sent to this address. We prefer work to be send as either rtf documents or MS Word files.
Artwork will probably require small thumbnail versions in the first instance.

Currently Jupiter is not in a position to pay contributors, however you will of course receive a complimentary copy in which your work appears.

Further useful reading on writing and submitting to publications in general can be found on the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America website.
